Four contemporary townhouses within Ramsgate’s historic quarter
Situated off Addington Street, just five minutes’ walk from Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour, Westcliff Works transforms a former commercial site into four contemporary family homes within the Ramsgate Conservation Area.
The development replaces a utilitarian 1960s motor workshop and forecourt with a terrace of new townhouses, sensitively positioned among the surrounding Georgian architecture and historic streets.
Drawing on the area's rich architectural character, the design introduces alternating red and buff brickwork, decorative brick panels and slender, rhythmically arranged windows. Contemporary vertical screening and recessed entrances add further depth and detail to the elevations. Each home fronts Addington Place with its own driveway and landscaped frontage, leading to courtyard gardens.
An important aspect of the design is the retention of the historic flint boundary wall along Hertford Place, preserving a tangible connection to the site's earlier history. Accessed from Addington Street, an area characterised by its military and retail heritage and growing community of artists and independent businesses, the development introduces a contemporary layer to Ramsgate's evolving historic quarter.
Planning permission was secured in December 2022. Following the site's acquisition by local developers Olive & Oak Homes in 2025, del Renzio & del Renzio continued their involvement through technical design and construction. The homes incorporate highly insulated building fabric, air-source heat pumps and electric vehicle charging facilities.
Now under construction, with completion anticipated in early 2027, the project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can regenerate an underused urban site while respecting its historic setting.
